The single most important advancement in saving sick foals has been the ready availability of safe and protective commercial plasma products. I have used Mg Biologics’ product and have been very satisfied with the results. Given a choice between antibiotics and plasma – one or the other – I would always choose plasma. I have seen miracles. One thing isn’t always enough, but without plasma, everything else is second best. I practiced before plasma was so safe and available, so I have experienced both sides. It’s like the difference between a propellor plane and a jet. Needless to say, I have a very strong opinion. And when the benefit is factored into the cost, there is no contest. Plasma works. Not every foal lives but it gives the foal some unquantifiable extra. It’s a life force. And sometimes more than one liter is required, but it still is the single most important advancement for saving sick foals. Now every veterinarian and farm can have bags in the freezer as cost effective insurance policies to give at a moment’s notice. I tend to get carried away. I feel that way about Mozart and the ’86 Mets.
